My top five oils for natural hair that have served me without disappointment are as follows:

  1. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)– is the best oil I have used on my natural hair. 9 times out of 10, I use it as a pre-poo treatment and it never fails me. It softens my hair, gives sheen and prevents clarifying shampoos from stripping out all the moisture from my hair. I have also read that it strengthens your hair and can help alleviate dandruff.
  2. Shea Oil– I use shea oil from R and R Luxury and it’s wonderful! Shea oil absorbs quicker than shea butter and it does not weigh my hair down. If I want sleek edges without the use of gel, I use this oil and it gives me good results. It also has all the amazing benefits of shea butter so you don’t have to use both.
  3. Castor Oil– When my scalp feels dry or it’s itching a little, I use this oil. It literally heals it all and I don’t have to bother anymore. The brand I use is Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil and it is also known to aid hair growth so that’s a plus!
  4. Coconut Oil– I use this oil with everything! Hair, skin, cooking etc. I know I’m not alone on this. 🙂 Coconut Oil does not have an obvious effect on my natural hair aside from giving sheen and sealing moisture, but it happens to be the only oil that penetrates the hair shaft, which allows it to help hair growth and repair damaged hair.
  5. Monoi Oil (Monoi de Tahiti)– I have written a post about this oil here. It is made from pure Tahitian coconut oil and Tiare flowers and it smells lush! I use it to seal, add shine and tame frizz and it has been scientifically proven to improve hair elasticity and reduce breakage.

If you would like to try any of the oils mentioned above and you don’t know where to purchase them in Nigeria, send me an email at I have some in stock for sale with the exception of Monoi Oil. I have only one little bottle left.
