Ever wondered what natural hair mistakes you should avoid when growing out your natural hair?
Well, no need to worry anymore, today we are tacking 5 Natural Hair mistakes every natural should avoid.
We tend to overlook the small things that may be causing the most damage to hair and that is what our focus will be on in this article.
5 Natural Hair Mistakes Every Natural Should Avoid
1. Stop Using Expired Products (a very obvious natural hair mistake we all do)
Yes, the expired product is a real thing. Expired butter like shea butter and expired oils.
These products, butter, and oils only have a shelf life of two years that’s if they are kept in a dark cupboard or away from the sunlight.
So if they are more than 2 years, yea, it’s kinda questionable to check if they are still working.
However, with products, you can always check the bottom of the product to see when the expiry dates are.
I am really guilty of this.
I keep products for years and totally forget about them.
One day I remember and still use them on my natural hair but usually within the first few months of opening a product.
Try to use it all if not, chuck it away or give it to someone that would love it.
2. Change your Hair Tools frequently
It is important to change your hair tools frequently. (e.g. hairpins although they get missing by themselves).
However, try to change your bobby pins, your wide-tooth comb, your hair accessories, whatever you use on your natural hair, try to change them frequently.
Obviously, not every day or once in a week, please guys, don’t take the piss.
But change them frequently like, quarterly, once in four months or once in six months just to make sure that they don’t snag your hair because sometimes these tools tend to have split.
They tend to have split on the wide-tooth comb and especially when they begin to rust, it begins to pull out your hair after you have used them.
3. Less hands in your hair would prevent unnecessary breakage
I know its always tempting because natural hair is so glorious, so soft, and so nice to touch but try to reduce how many styles you do in a week and in a month. Less tension equals less breakage.
If your goal is long hair, then less hands in your hair will do you good but if you have reached your desired hair length like mine, then do whatever you want.
4. Use a hair mist every day to keep your hair moisturized.
I have been talking about hair mists since I started YouTube and I think it was even my first video. Literally, the whole natural hair community does not talk about hair mists and hair mists are the go-to product that you need to keep your hair moisturized throughout your hair life.
All you need is a product that is water-based, I have one that I use all the time and I mention it in my favorites video. Use a hair mist every other day to keep your hair soft and moisturized.
It is a liquid moisturizer. I always say this all the time but some people take it, some people don’t. But literally, it is the key to keeping your type 4 natural hair SOFT. So, please do that.
5. If your hair does not need to be exposed, Cover IT.
When you are going to bed or if you are going out on any day that you feel that your hair doesn’t need to be exposed, please cover it. When natural hair is covered with any kind of protective style or a headwrap, it protects it from the elements. (UVB, UVA rays).
Also, when your hair is protected, you don’t have to do much to keep it healthy. So simply try to keep your hair covered whenever you don’t need to show its gloriousness.
Alright, those are all my 5 tips, for now, don’t click away! I hope you all enjoyed this article, you can find more tips for natural hair care here and more videos to help you on your natural hair journey here.
