This post 5 Reasons Black Women Are Losing their Edges & Nape Hair first appeared on Igbocurls.com
Loss or thinning of edges and nape hair (but mostly edges) is a cause for concern for lots of block women around the world. It has gone so far as to affect even teenagers so yes, it is serious.
Today, I am writing to share with you all how I regrew my own nape hair and edges after I lost them. Stating different factors that contributed to this and how they may be also be affecting you without realising.
1.Lack of Moisture
When your hair is dry, it breaks. So if we don’t moisturize our nape hair and edges properly, they break off without we realizing. Always use a liquid based moisturiser which is a product with water as the first ingredient and a good combination of humectant and oils.
2. Tight Styles
These include, braids, weaves and wigs. Yup, even lace wigs and your precious crochet hairstyle.
It’s simple, if your braids give you a face lift then it is tight and pulling on your edges or if it gives you tiny bumps on your nape, then it’s also tight and needs to be loosened to prevent hair loss and thinning.
As for wigs, the lace within it, tends to pull on your edges so I recommend you wear a satin scarf underneath and try to make your wig fitted to prevent any embarrassments.
3. Your Clothes
Yup! You read right. Your clothes are culprits too. Those nice looking wool scarves, beanies and that turtle neck top that makes you look all feminine can be pulling nice strands off your edges and nape without you realizing. Sigh, it took me a while before I realized this.
One day, I was simply trying to take off a scarf and the next thing I felt was a few strands of the hair on my nape breaking.
You can imagine my horror.
4. The Weather
With the combination of all the factors above you’re thinking, “and I have to deal with the weather breaking my hair too?”
Well, yes. Sad but true.
Be it Winter or Harmattan in Nigeria, the weather will make you lose your edges and nape hair if you don’t adjust your regimen adequately.
5. Genetics
Yes, I may not have mentioned this in the video but this is also important. If you have a history of traction alopecia ( loss of edges) in your family, then it is hereditary. Visit a Trichologist to help you more.
