16 Myths, Hilarious Questions & Comments I get about my Natural Hair
I am very happy to be blessed with the privilege of educating people about natural hair and often times, I get the same reactions from different people. I am always keen to answer and dispel myths about natural hair at every opportunity and below are common natural hair questions, comments and myths I’ve been told about natural hair so far.
- Is that your hair??- It’s quite common for me to get this question especially since a lot of African women don’t wear their natural hair out regularly so I’m always eager to say yes, and encourage them to go natural.
- Why is it so full? – Some women of African decent have 2-3 hair strands growing from one follicle so our hair is naturally voluminous.
- Is your hair virgin? – **Straight face** Yes it is.
- How do you maintain it?– I start talking about my whole regimen.
- How is your hair curly? It naturally grows out of my hair like that. Yours does the same too. You just have to stop relaxing your hair.
- Can I touch it? – Yes you can but are your hands clean?
- “Your hair is long oh, imagine if you put relaxer on it. It’ll be longer”. No comment -_-
- Is your hair real?– Yes it is. Thank you! I can teach you to grow yours as well. Then I begin rambling about what he/she can do to grow their hair naturally. You can find some tips here.
- What kind of style is on your hair? Is it crochet or kinky braids?- Sorry its not a style. It’s actually my hair. My real hair.
- Your hair feels like cotton/wool.- I know! Thank you! It’s amazing what God blessed us with.
- My hair is more stubborn than yours. Nope! No such thing. If you give your hair the proper moisture it needs under a good haircare regimen, your hair should be as soft as cotton/wool as some people may say.
- You have naturally soft hair-FALSE! Read the answer above.
- Natural Hair is too hard. – FALSE again! Read the answer above.
- Are you mixed? Nope! 100% Nigerian.
- How do you comb your hair? – I comb my hair the opposite way you comb your hair, from ends to roots because my hair is curly.
- I can’t grow my natural hair, it’s just to hard. – It is all in the mind! You can do anything, (in this case growing your natural hair) so don’t discourage yourself before you consider it, rather educate yourself on it first and take the plunge. Who knows, you can have healthy waist length hair in just 3 years. 🙂
What kind of comments do you get about your natural hair and how do you respond to them? Please share below!

Lol! I get number 7 a lot! I just smile politely and say ‘No, I won’t put relaxer on it’.
I also get comments like ‘This natural hair thing is just a fashion fad. It will soon phase away’. I simply reply ‘I went natural to reduce the use of chemicals on my skin. Do you know that your skin absorbs 60% of whatever you put on it…more for babies?’ This usually gets their attention before I start to talk about the dangerous chemicals in relaxers.
‘I like your weavon, what’s the name?’ To which I respond ‘It’s not a weavon. It”s my hair’
‘How do I style my hair to be like yours?’ My response ‘It”s actually very easy, but you have to stop relaxing your hair first.’
‘I wish I could go natural, but natural hair is just too expensive.’ My response ‘Not really. Water, shea butter, black soap and coconut oil are not expensive.’
Yup! People still think it’s a trend. (Healthy hair is not a trend people!) It’s here to stay haha. 🙂
I definitely need to borrow your natural hair is not expensive response. It’s a winner!
If it’s a trend, it’s been trending for hundreds/ thousands of years then.
Haha! TELL’EM
I get all those questions/comments. But I keep reminding myself that I thought the same things until I learned, so be patient with others. We all grew up being taught that relaxers were the way to go, so now we who know better must teach – one person at a time.
Of course! That’s the only way we can move forward. I always think, aha! I’ve gotten your attention, let me see how I can help your hair.
I wear my hair out a lot, I always get few questions 1, 4, 6,8, 12,16 last one can you tell me what product that will make my hair grow like your #smh

Lol I get number 7 alllll the time especially when I go to the salon to get a PS. I just look at them with the straightest expression on my face. imagine explaining urself to one igbo woman who is talking to you like she knows you and ur hair more than you know urselves.
Hahahaha! I completely understand. They are act like they know what is best for your hair. Sigh**
God bless your soul for this hair regimen and recommendation and your truthfulness about product use and what works. Because many people will say do this and that knowing all hair types aren’t the same. Thank you for looking so beautiful naturally and sharing your secrets to help other African ladies to embrace their God-given kinky. I just love it. Thank you!
Thank you too for showing and expressing your support for me. You among many are the reason I started this blog. I REALLY appreciate your support. God bless you!
Thank you for making this blog possible. I stumbled upon your IG account today and I must say I am glad I did. As of Sunday I made up my mind to keep growing and maintaining my natural hair. I fully transitioned as of 2 months ago but was considering going back to relaxers cos of the pain when I do experience whilst making my hair. Before meeting your blog, I was of the opinion that some people (mostly me) just had natural stubborn, comb breaking and finger slicing hair but I think I know better now. Yesterday I got some Natural ingredients like mayonnaise, eggs, Shea Butter and olive oil which I mixed together and applied on my hair before washing and then I dried it with a cotton t-shirt. I dont have a satin bonnet though, but baby steps is all am taking @ the mo’. Pls I need a sulfate free shampoo to be applying as am still using my current shampoo (Royallaux) and then I need to know more about deconditioning.
Thanks and God bless
Hi Carla!
First of all, I love your name, Icequeen! Its so catchy! Secondly, thank you for taking time out to write me. I appreciate it! I do apologize for my late reply. Baby steps are definitely good and I know you think online shopping is a bit of a joke but its really not that bad. I have a Sulphate Free Shampoo that I use called As I Am Curl Clarity Shampoo and you can find it at my online store here. http://shopigbocurls.com/product/As-I-Am-Curl-Clarity-Sulphate-Free-Shampoo
I can identify with all those comments but my replies aren’t always nice. I wrote about similar reactions I get to my hair https://peoniesandrubies.wordpress.com/2016/07/29/weird-reactions-i-have-received-to-my-natural-hair/ I can sort of see where they are coming from though, you have lovely hair (hair goals). I enjoyed this post. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! I’m going to read yours now.
