This post 7 Amazing Natural Hair Oils for Hair Growth & Thickness first appeared on igbocurls.com
We all use oils for something in our lives. From cooking to personal hair care, we all have particular oils we prefer to use here and there.
So today, I’ll be letting you in on the top seven natural hair oils for sealing and moisturizing that are great for natural hair care.
The first and most important thing to note is, OILS ARE NOT MOISTURISERS. However, there are oils that can penetrate the hair shaft (penetrating oils) and there are others that sit on top of the hair shaft (sealing oils).
Having said that, here are our 7 Amazing Natural Hair Oils for Hair Growth
1. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil is undoubtedly the best oil for my natural hair. I can say for certain that this wonderful oil completely nourishes and conditions my natural hair.
- Prevents cell damage,
- It contains antioxidants that help maintain scalp and hair health,
- Helps to tame frizz and;
- It combats dandruff.
2. Avocado Oil
The second oil on my list is Avocado Oil. This oil comes in second on my list because it works almost as good as extra virgin olive oil does for my natural hair.
- It is rich in oleic acid and monounsaturated fats,
- Like olive oil, it penetrates the hair shaft.
- It contains vitamin E which helps protect our natural hair from ultraviolet rays from the sun.
- Great for combatting dandruff and;
- Perfect for individuals with medium to low porosity natural hair. This is because it is lightweight and absorbs fast.
3. Coconut Oil for Hair Growth
Coconut oil has gotten a lot of negativity from the natural hair community over the years because it has been associated with breakage but I really like this oil for many reasons.
- The first is the fact that it has anti-bacterial properties that help protect the scalp from infections.
- It is high in protein and therefore reduces protein loss in our hair strands. This is because some naturals tend to overuse coconut oil that they experience protein overload which can cause natural hair to be hard and inevitably break even with low manipulation.
- It prevents hygral fatigue which is in essence, the swelling and shrinking of the hair fibres.
4. Castor Oil for Hair Growth
Our next oil is Castor Oil and it comes in three types.
- Pure/Cold Pressed Castor Oil
- Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)
- Hydrogenated Castor Oil
The main difference between cold-pressed castor oil and JBCO is that with Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) the castor seeds are roasted before being pressed for the oil.
Then the ashes of the roasted castor seeds are also added to the oil to give it a dark colour.
Hydrogenated castor oil, on the other hand, is simply castor oil that is charged with hydrogen to turn it into the wax. This type of castor wax is used mostly in cosmetic products.
Some of the benefits of Castor Oil include:
- It controls excessive shedding when used to massage the scalp. However, this does not apply to women experiencing postpartum shedding.
- Castor oil encourages hair growth. The keyword to note here is ‘encourage’ because castor oil alone cannot make your hair grow. It contains ricinoleic acid which improves blood circulation and in combination with fatty acids nourishes hair shafts and roots.
- It also makes hair smoother and shinier.
5. Monoi Oil for Hair Growth
If you have never heard of Monoi Oil, it is a beautifully scented oil. It is produced in Tahiti in French Polynesia and they use Taire flowers mixed with pure coconut oil to come up with the pleasing oil that is Monoi Oil.
Also, due to the fact that it contains coconut oil, it has all the benefits of coconut oil, plus a high concentration of Vitamin E which helps maintain the elasticity of natural hair.
6. Jojoba Oil for Hair Growth
The next oil is Jojoba. This is the only organic oil that mimics the natural oil produced from our scalp called sebum.
The benefits of Jojoba oil include;
- Preventing hair loss
- Improving the thickness of hair and,
- Remedies dandruff.
7. Almond Oil for Hair Growth
The final top oil is Almond Oil. It is a natural emollient which means that it fills the gaps in natural hair at a cellular level.
It also makes your natural hair soft, smooth and easier to manage.
There you have it, my top oils for hair growth. You can find more about the benefits and differences of your favourite oil here. You can also read more on oils here.
However, always remember that all the above oils work better when used in combination with a full natural hair routine like you can find here.
