8 Tips To Maintain, Grow and Care for 4c Hair
4c Hair Care
- Deep Condition
The foundation of 4c hair is moisture so our first tip is deep condition.
Deep condition every single time you wash your natural hair.
Even if you chose to cut corners, always make sure to deep condition.
It is a major step in 4c hair care that provides the balance of protein and moisture your 4c hair needs. - Avoid Over Washing
On the subject of deep conditioning, please avoid over-washing your 4c hair.
The more you wash with shampoo too frequently, the more moisture you lose.
This will lead to dry and brittle hair. I recommend washing your 4c natural hair every 2 weeks as opposed to washing every week. - Stop Touching Your Hair Every Second
Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration but if you can avoid over washing then you can avoid over manipulation.
Excessive combing, brushing, and styling will lead to breakage and a whole headache of split ends and single strand knots.
So please, if you don’t have to restyle your natural hair, then try to avoid touching your 4c hair. - Protective Style
At this point, you are probably thinking at what point will I not want to comb or brush my natural hair?
Well, if you put your natural hair in a protective style, the ends of your 4c hair will be protected thereby reducing high chances of breakage if left exposed.
Protective styles include any hairstyle that does not cause tension to the scalp and also hides the ends/tips of your 4c hair.
You can find images of protective styles here. - Sleep with a Satin Scarf or Bonnet
In addition to protective styling, you can complete protecting your 4c hair by wearing a satin scarf or bonnet to sleep.
That way, all the moisture you put in your natural hair remains intact till the next morning. - Use a Leave-in Conditioner
Now how can you keep a style in till your next wash day?
Simple. Invest in a leave-in conditioner made for 4c hair. This leave-in conditioner should come in a hair mist so you can easily spray it on your natural hair.
Use this leave-in conditioner mist at least 3 times a week to keep your 4c hair manageable, soft and moisturized. - Massage Your Scalp
To help keep your scalp promote hair growth, use an oil like extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil to massage your scalp.
This allows blood circulation to your scalp and in turn, increases hair growth.
You can find more about oils in 7 top oils for 4c hair. - Moisturise and Seal
Always and I mean ALWAYS moisturize with a leave-in conditioner and cream and seal with an oil every time you style your natural hair.
This will help prevent breakage, split ends and single strand knots.

Hi Naila,
I understand how you feel. Last year, I left my hair unattended for months at a time and I experienced a lot of breakage.
Avoid leaving your hair longer than a week without moisturizing and also avoiding going more than a month without washing.
I hope this helps.
Hello, can I moisturize and seal with cream and oil daily?
Hi Chimama, If your hair absorbs it quickly and doesn’t feel weighed down, please do. Otherwise, you can use a daily leave in Spray moisturizer.
