DIY Moisturizing Deep Conditioner for Natural Hair

DIY Moisturizing Deep Conditioner for Natural Hair

One of my lovely readers suggested I write more DIY posts and I totally agree with the idea. Not everyone always has that extra cash for natural hair products so it’s certainly okay to whip up something in your kitchen that can do almost the same work as your deep conditioner.

Also, this DIY moisturizing deep conditioner was what I used to prep my hair for my White Box Braids and it left my hair feeling soft and moisturized.

Ingredients:

  • Mayonnaise – 4 tbsp
  • Honey- 2 tbsp
  • Olive oil- 2 tbsp
  • Apple Cider Vinegar- 1 tbsp
  • Vitamin E- 1 capsule or 5 drops

*The measurements make about a 100ml and is suitable for medium length hair. If you have long hair, double the amount.

Mayonnaise is the protein, honey is the humectant, olive oil and vitamin e are both conditioning agents and apple cider vinegar is for shine and balancing the pH level of hair.

I used the Heinz brand for the mayonnaise and my honey was locally sourced so it had no preservatives or additives. The olive oil brand I used is called Laser, the apple cider vinegar brand is called Magic Time while the vitamin E capsule brand is called Puritans Pride. You don’t have to use the same brands, any brand you have in your kitchen that works for you is good enough.

Method

Put all your ingredients in one bowl and mix for 30 seconds or more until smooth. If you want it thicker add an extra spoon of mayonnaise. To apply, completely coat your ends first, then gradually work up the length of your hair. Leave the conditioner mix in your hair under a shower cap for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Results

This DIY mix should leave your hair & hands soft and should also add a little shine. The smell is also very mild for my girls with sensitive nostrils. (I gotchu!)

thanks and God bless, it smells like my hair will love it. but the Heinz,is it the paste for salads and how long does the remnants last, lol.

Lol! That’s a valid question. If you follow my measurements, you won’t have to keep any left overs but just in case there are, you can only store them in a fridge for a few hours. Also, yes it’s the paste for salads but it is not salad cream. Check the jar and make sure it reads Mayonnaise.

Did you twist your hair prior to conditioning or after?

Yes, I always twist my hair immediately after finger detangling. Which is before I shampoo & deep condition.

Hi Anulika! Do you use anything prior to using the oils? and do you fix weaves and braid extensions?

Not at all. In fact, I have my hair in plaits and I’ve been on wigs since January. Chinwe my edges are in terrible shape. Don’t even get me started on garlic and onion oils, I’ve done them all. Please help me.

When you wear your wigs do you wear a scarf underneath? The net material under the wigs tend to pull on our edges if you don’t wear a scarf underneath. Also, for how long have you been trying to grow your edges?

I’ve been trying to grow my edges since I went natural about 3 years ago. It’ll grow a bit, and just fall away. And about wearing a scarf under my wigs, I honestly do not do that. I’ll start. Thanks a lot for pointing that out. Are there any other products or hair treatments I should try out?

Since you’ve mentioned that your edges grow a bit then it means, it hasn’t been damaged at the follicle. Let me send you an email.

Hi Chinwe, nice work you’re doing here. I just found you today, lol. How do you get products into the inner hair in twists? I find myself twisting and retwisting between detangling, shampooing, deep conditioning, oiling and sealing.

      Hi dearie!

You don’t need to re-twist. All I do is squeeze the products into the twists when I apply them. With that, my inner hair is shampooed, deep conditioned and etc. I hope this helps.
