9 Dos and Dont’s for 4C Hair Type for Growth and Thickness first appeared on igbocurls.com
“I have been doing EVERYTHING yet my hair is not growing.”
If you have said this to yourself or to someone you thought could help, then todays post is for you.
Before we begin, I just want to let you know that your natural hair is beautiful so you don’t have to compare or wish you had any other hair texture.
Even though your natural hair may seem like a lot of work to you now but as you learn and practice, you will see it grow and flourish.
Today, I will be sharing only 9 do’s and don’ts for growing natural hair but you can always find 50 more tips and tricks to help you grow your natural hair faster and longer here.
Do’s & Don’ts for 4C Hair Type
Tip 1.
Sectioning Your Hair
Sectioning your natural hair before you wash matters especially if your hair has grown past your shoulders. This helps to prevent excessive single strand knots and unnecessary tangles.
For example, if your natural hair is long and you have 4c hair type like me, I always suggest you learn to wash in twists or braids.
This reduces tangles, single strand knots and detangling time. I see a lot of 4c hair videos online where they wash their hair loose and it makes me cringe because 4c natural hair experiences at least 70% of shrinkage so what they may not be showing you is how many single strand knots and tangles they are getting.
Tip 2.
Don’t Be Afraid To Trim
Trimming when done properly will not inhibit your hair growth but rather will prevent your hair from having split ends that will eventually lead to serious damage.
I advice to trim once in 6 months if you don’t have many knots and tangles or trim once in 2-3 months if you do.
Tip 3.
Leave in Conditioners
Look for leave in conditioners that have great reviews for detangling type 4 hair. You need as much slip as possible to allow your kinks and curls unravel when you comb or brush through to detangle.
In addition, leave in conditioners are essential for keeping your 4c hair soft and moisturised.
Tip 4.
Detangling
Moving on from tip 3, 4c natural hair needs to be detangled from ends to roots using a wide tooth comb or a game changer brush specifically designed for 4c hair. However, the best method for detangling will always be using your fingers.
Your fingers are better because you can feel and work through the knots in your 4c natural hair and detangle them easily with a conditioner as opposed to using combs.
Tip 5.
Layering
To keep your 4c natural hair moisturised for longer, layering is key. Layering is simply the order you apply products to your hair to retain moisture.
There are 3 different methods you can try to find out what works for you.
- First apply Leave in conditioner, cream and oil (LCO method)
- Leave in conditioner, Oil & Cream (LOC)
- Leave in conditioner & Hair Butter
Tip 6.
Porosity
Porosity is the ability of your 4c hair to absorb water. Determining the rate at which your hair absorbs water will help in choosing the right products for your hair texture.
The easiest way to find out your hair texture is to pick a strand of shed hair after shampooing and run your fingers along it from ends to roots. If your hair cuticle feels smooth, then you have low porosity hair and if it feels rough you have high porosity hair. If it is neither the former or latter then you have normal porosity hair.
In other words, how the hair cuticle lays determines your hairs porosity.
Tip 7.
Styling with Gels
Gels are not moisturising and can be very drying to 4c natural hair so try to reduce how frequently you use them.
Tip 8.
Styling Options
On the subject of styling, 4c natural hair is capable if being worn in multiple styles. Don’t be discouraged by how thick and shrunken your hair may be. Our hair styling options are literally unlimited.
Tip 9.
Low Manipulation Hairstyling
As you learn about your hair texture and begin to get creative with styles, remember that if your hair goals involve length retention, (that is, seeing your hair grow), keep your hair in styles that will reduce how much you manipulate your hair.
Don’t style your hair everyday. It will lead to hair breakage so avoid it.
