I like Kinky Twists because they are lighter to wear than box braids made with kanekalon hair. I usually have them in once a year at around March or April and keep them in for a maximum of 8 weeks . I re-do the twists in front and and at my nape to keep it neat and to remove any shed hair and/or lint that may have attached itself to my hair to cause unintentional loc-ing.
My routine for maintaining my hair neat and moisturised is to cleanse my scalp with non-oily facial wipes. I have always used Boots essential cleansing wipes but I am going to have to find an alternative because I have just run out of this. (Anyway, any non-oily facial wipes should work just fine in keeping your scalp free from excess buildup).
I then proceed with spritzing my hair moisturisers along the braid or twists on my hair. The moisturisers I use are; Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier, Sulphur 8 Spray for Braids and Weaves and/or Schwarzkopf keratin spray for protein.( I try not to use anything else to avoid my twists smelling and attracting a lot of build up).
These two (sometimes three), liquid moisturisers have my hair moisturised without leaving my hair oily or greasy afterwards. Instead, they leave my hair noticeably shiny and my hair underneath soft.
I have been using these products on my protective styles for the past two years and they have helped maintain my hair healthy.
Let me know if this quick method of maintaining braids or twists work for you. 🙂
Note:- I do not wash my hair in braids/twists because the first and last time I did, my hair started loc-ing itself. This method above has saved me the stress and inconvenience of having to go through that again. In addition, when I feel slight itchiness on my scalp I spray my Sulphur 8 directly on the itchy spot and it takes care of it immediately.
