As I approach my birthday (on the 17th!) and my healthy natural hair anniversary (I don’t have a specific date so I always celebrate it after my birthday and it’s been 5 years! shocked), I can’t help but smile. I remember how much I used to watch YouTube videos and read so many natural hair care books in my first year natural. Little did I know that I would be teaching and mentoring loads of people in just two years.
When I stopped using relaxers and other chemicals to alter my hair pattern, (you can read more of my story here), I was so surprised at my curls.
I had different curl patterns on different parts of my scalp so you can imagine for someone like me who had never known what her natural hair texture was to have CURLS. I had not just one type but about 3 different types! I was so excited that I took so many pictures!
Fast forward to a year and a half later. My hair was at the awkward length stage. Not long but not short either, just simply hanging (literally). I didn’t know what to do with it, so I protective styled with natural hair looking wigs and box braids and at other intervals, I played around with Updos. I tried styling my hair in different ways and just made it work in whatever way I could in order to make it for my lectures.
At this point, I didn’t know I was getting good at styling natural hair.
Presently, I am in LOVE with my hair. It is everything that I never knew a few years ago, and better yet, I am super thankful to be able to inspire you all. So the next time someone gives you negative comments about your hair, you can show them this post or simply tell them, MY NATURAL HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL, PROFESSIONAL, SEXY, CLASSY, PERFECT & EVERYTHING I want it to BE.
