It’s that time of the year again. If you follow this blog or my natural hair journey you would already know I originated volume checks on natural hair in December 2012 and do it once a year. For those of you who don’t know, I’ll give you a brief history of how I started volume checks, why you should be doing it and also how to do it.
In December 2012, when I took the first picture on the left, all I wanted to do was show how much my hair had grown. Then, I was 2 years natural so I was pretty excited that my hair was growing. The only problem was, I wanted to have ‘big hair’, which I did, but couldn’t see.
Here’s the thing, I have kinky 4c hair that naturally falls so I can’t see how big my hair is looking at a mirror.
So I decided that night, to get my sister, the dancer, (watch her videos here), to take a picture of what my hair looked like from the top. You can imagine my surprise when I finally saw the ‘big hair’ I was looking for. Little did I know that every year after that, my hair would keep increasing in volume.
[bctt tweet="Natural hair is unique and insanely beautiful."]
Even I can’t help but stare at my own volume check photos. I never saw it coming or as Nigerians would say, I neva experred it. ha
From then on, after a protective style (as I did the first time), I would take a volume check picture.
Why should you try volume checks?
I recommend volume checks for people who are just as curious as I was and also to people who don’t see a difference in length but notice that their hair grows bigger instead.
You never know. Your natural hair may surprise you just like mine did.
HOW TO:
I check my volume only once a year and every time I do, I make sure my hair is completely finger detangled. You can choose to blow-out your hair or comb your hair out, it’s entirely up to you. The point is your hair should be stretched but not straightened. Try to use the same method every year to get an adequate result and all you simply need to do is bend your head forward. In my YouTube video, I show you how to do a volume check, but bear in mind that my hair wasn’t completely detangled in that footage.

I made the video brief and I hope I answered your questions about volume checks. Don’t forget to leave me a comment below and subscribe to my YouTube channel if you’d like more videos.

Hey Juliet, what do you use to make your hair so voluminous?
Hello!
I did not use anything in particular, I have as with many other people, 2 or more strands growing out of one follicle so my hair is naturally voluminous. However, there are products available to help make your hair appear thicker.
